Shade Layout Planner

Welcome! This guide will walk you through the simple steps to design the ideal ShadeFit Kit shade solution for your outdoor living space.

  1. Draw a simple overhead view of your deck. Include the shape of the deck, the adjacent house or structures, and any existing features like railings, stairs, or built-in benches.
  2. Visualize Post Placement: Look at your sketch and think about where you want your shade to be, considering the sun's movement throughout the day and across different seasons. Mark potential locations for the posts on your diagram. Consider where the most sun exposure is and how you want to use the shaded space.
  3. Review your design: Look at your marked up sketch. Does the post placement provide the shade coverage you need? Does it work with the flow and use of your deck space? Make any necessary adjustments. This visual will help you to confirm your design.

  • Perimeter Mounting: This option mounts outside the railings, saving inside deck space. Straight and corner mount hardware is available.
  • Surface Mounting: This option is used when installing directly on the interior deck surface. This can be used for unique layouts or when you need shade closer to the center of your deck.

Now that you have your deck diagram ready, it's time to start measuring and marking where your posts will go. Keep these important points in mind:
  • Post Length: The posts will measure 8 feet above the deck, and their total length is greater to allow for secure mounting.
  • Shade Sections: Continue measuring and marking intervals along this run to match your chosen shade lengths.  Continue measuring and marking intervals along this run to match your chosen shade lengths.
  • Shades may be sourced through our Suppliers in various standard or custom lengths, or you may provide your own.  Regardless of the source, choose the specific sizes or combinations that fit your diagram before marking your post locations.
Now it's time to transfer your diagram to the deck and mark your post locations.

For Layouts with Corners:

  1. Identify Your Starting Corner: If your layout has a corner, begin here. This will be the location of your first post.
  2. Mark the First Section:
    • From the corner of the deck fascia (the surface below the deck), measure out the distance that corresponds to your chosen shade length.
    • Mark this spot. This is the location for your second post.
    • Continue measuring and marking intervals along this run to match your chosen shade lengths.  Continue measuring and marking intervals along this run to match your chosen shade lengths.
  3. Mark the Second Section (from the same corner):
    • Return to your starting corner.
    • Repeat Step 2, measuring and marking post locations for the other side of the corner.

For Straight Runs:

  1. Find the Center: Locate the midpoint of the total length of your desired shade run. This will be your starting point.
  2. Mark Outward from Center:
    • From the center point, measure out the distance for your first shade in one direction and mark the post location.
    • Continue marking intervals that match your chosen shade lengths until you complete the run.
    • Return to the center point and repeat this process in the opposite direction.

Before selecting your kits, double-check the post locations you've marked on your deck to ensure this is the final layout you desire.
  • Count Your Posts: Based on your chosen mounting style and the marked locations, determine the total number of posts you will need.
  • Shared Posts: Posts can support multiple shade sections, which may reduce the overall number of posts required. Refer to your diagram to confirm where posts can be shared.

Now, based on your confirmed deck layout and where your shade sections meet or end, choose the appropriate Location Kits:
  • Inside Corner Kit: Use for corners where two shade sections meet on the inside (used for fascia mounts only).
  • Outside Corner Kit: Use for corners where two shade sections meet on the outside.
  • End Kit: Use for the beginning or end of a single shade section or run. This kit is compatible with both left and right orientations by flipping the mounting plate.
  • Middle Kit: Use to connect multiple posts within a run.

  • Choose your desired color for the hardware.
Congratulations! Once you have completed these steps and recorded your measurements, you have all the information needed to place your ShadeFit Kit order and transform your deck into a comfortably shaded oasis!
